VIRTUAL Portraits of Two Authors: Flannery O'Connor and Gwendolyn Brooks

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Event Details

For adults.
Explore the lives of Flannery O’Connor and Gwendolyn Brooks through the works of two award-winning children’s authors, Cozbi A. Cabrera and Amy Alznauer. View the rare images from the O’Connor and Brooks library archives that helped Cabrera and Alznauer tell the fascinating stories of these two historical figures. In sharing original artwork and sketches from their respective illustrated books, Cabrera and Alznauer will reflect on the process of telling the stories of these two authors who lived parallel, but vastly different lives. A part of telling these stories is examining how race impacted the authors’ lives and how artists explore race in America. Following these presentations, there will be an opportunity for questions as well as a discussion between Cabrera and Alznauer about their own work and the lives and writings of O’Connor and Brooks.
Cabrera is the illustrator of the award-winning Exquisite: The Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks (written by Suzanne Slade) and Alznauer is the author of the New York Times Best Children’s Book The Strange Birds of Flannery O’Connor: A Life (Illustrated by Ping Zhu).
This program will be presented using Zoom. Participants must register and provide a working email address to receive the login information.
Co-sponsored with the Prospect Heights Public Library.
