Event Details

Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare directed by Michelle Shupe.
For never was a story of more woe,
Than that of Juliet and her Romeo.
The classic tale of star-crossed Romeo and Juliet, published in the quarto around 1597, is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved and most frequently performed plays. Although the play begins with a street fight between the factions of Montague and Capulet, Romeo and Juliet appears at first blush to be mostly a comedy. The dramatic action is rife with marriage planning, falling in love, romantic counsel, teenage antics, a fabulous party, and one of the most poetic love scenes in all literature. But with the death of the Prince’s cousin Mercutio, the play turns to tragedy. The feud between warring families surges to the fore: violence erupts, Romeo is banished, and a dangerous plot hatches as Juliet is to marry the Count Paris. The wheel of fate turns once more when, unable to relinquish their ancient feud, the families pay the ultimate price.
See and hear Shakespeare and his contemporaries in a new light when the Mount Prospect Public Library Foundation brings The Shakespeare Project of Chicago back for this theatrical reading. As there are no sets, props, or costumes, you may find the Project’s readings help you truly experience Shakespeare’s words.
At 7 p.m. an introduction to the play begins. Following the play, a discussion and opportunity to interact with the actors and creative team will further enrich your experience. This program is sponsored by the Mount Prospect Public Library Foundation, which raises funds for special programming and events.
