National Alliance on Mental Illness presents an evening with Tyra Manning, author of the memoir Where the Water Meets the Sand. Manning learned that her husband had been killed in the Vietnam War from her psychiatrist at the Menninger Clinic, where she had been hospitalized for clinical depression. After years of battling addiction and depression, and coping with the tragic loss of her father at a very early age, Manning then had to continue on after Larry was shot down over the Laotian jungle just two weeks before their daughter’s second birthday.
This program is presented jointly with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)/Cook County North Suburban chapter. The mission of NAMI Cook County North Suburban is to improve the lives of individuals with serious mental illness and those who love and care for them through education, support, and advocacy.
